Work Permit

A work permit authorizes a foreign national to work in Canada on a temporary basis. Work permits are either open or employer-specific, depending on the conditions attached to the job and employer.

a. Open work permits- Not tied to an employer. Common pathways include spouses of students or workers, recent graduates with a PGWP, and certain vulnerable workers.

b. Employer-specific work permit-Tied to one employer, job, and location. Usually requires an LMIA unless an LMIA exemption applies.

Eligibility basics

- Valid travel document
- No criminal or immigration violations
- Medical exam when required
- Proof you will leave Canada when the permit expires
- Proof of financial capacity
- Compliance with prior status conditions

Work Permit Extensions:

Foreign workers must maintain valid status to continue working in Canada. A work permit extension allows you to remain employed beyond your current permit’s expiry date, provided you meet all eligibility requirements.

You should apply for an extension before your work permit expires. If you apply on time, you may continue working under maintained status until a decision is made. Eligibility for an extension depends on your current permit type, your continued employment, and whether your employer still meets program requirements such as LMIA or employer compliance obligations.
