Authorization to return to Canada (ARC)
Authorization to Return to Canada (ARC)
An Authorization to Return to Canada (ARC) is special written permission required for individuals who were previously removed from Canada and now wish to return. You must apply for an ARC if you were issued:
1. Deportation Order
Required in all cases before re-entry.
2. Exclusion Order
Required only if you wish to return before the 12-month ban has expired.
If the exclusion was issued due to misrepresentation, an ARC is required for 5 years.
3. Departure Order
Usually no ARC is needed if:
- You left Canada within 30 days, and
- You verified your departure with CBSA.
If these steps were not completed, the Departure Order becomes a Deportation Order and an ARC is required.
Applying for an ARC is not a guarantee of approval. Immigration officers will weigh various factors when assessing your application, including:
- The reasons you were removed
- The likelihood you will comply with immigration rules
- Your current situation and purpose of return
- Whether circumstances have changed since removal
- The risk of reoccurrence of past issues
Please note that An ARC is not guaranteed even if you meet the requirements. Strong documentation and a clear explanation of your purpose of travel improve your chances.
ARC is usually requested as part of a new visa or permit application. You should not apply for ARC alone unless instructed.
